MUSIC 146 SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Offers orchestra experience for qualified students in a music transfer program and interested members of the community. All members of the orchestra must be able to read music and prior experience as an instrumentalist in school, municipal or professional orchestra is desirable. This course is repeatable three times. One credit hour will be awarded each time the student successfully completes the course. The total number of credits that may be applied to a degree shall be four credits. Prerequisite: Audition and consent of the instructor. (PCS 1.1, 1 credit hour: 3 hours lab)

AUDITION AND INSTRUCTOR CONSENT REQUIRED
New Member Requirements
Requirements for acceptance into Alton Symphoy Orchestra are to ensure the quality of musicians among members of ASO, and to further ensure the continued development and improvement of symphonic music.
The music director and representative members of the orchestra have implemented requirements for acceptance into ASO, as specified in the following bullets:
1. Any musician is welcome to audition for ASO, which shall occur in the presence of the music director/conductor and concertmaster, and any other member deemed appropriate by the former (i.e. Section principal). Such audition must occur at a specified time agreed upon by all parties.
2. The auditioning musician must have a prepared piece of music and be willing to play scales and/or sight-read music at the director's discretion. Acceptable pieces of music include:
A. One movement from a concerto
B. Etude of reasonable difficulty*
C. Passage from known piece of music (i.e. Symphony) of at least moderate
difficulty*
(*standard of ease/difficulty may be determined by director and section
principal)
3. Musicians must be able to demonstrate proficiency at playing his/her instrument, be able to project good tone/sound and be able to sight-read music.
4. A musician who is at high-school level or below and who wishes to audition for entrance into ASO must concurrently be taking private music lessons on the auditioning instrument, a minimum of one hour per week. ASO reserves the right to ask for information regarding the auditioner's present and past music educator(s).
5. The ultiimate decision of acceptance resides with the music director/conductor
of the ASO
ASO welcomes potential new comers to rehearse with the group at the first and second rehearsals of each concert season, after which an acceptance into the orchestra is required to continue playing with the group. Requests for exceptions to any of the above can be made to the ASO's personnel manager or the music director/conductor, and said exception can be made ONLY if permitted by the latter.
