The Four Families
A symphony orchestra is made up of groups of instruments which are related to each other in the way they sound, the way they are constructed or the way they are played.  There are four main groups or families of instruments in a symphony orchestra.
 

The String Family

The string family is the largest family in

 the orchestra.

The woodwind family gets its name because it originally contained wind instruments
