Schedule of Concerts
2007
- 2008
Contrasts From America
November
3, 2007 - 8:00 pm at Hatheway Hall
Concert selections are Leonard
Bernstein’s wildly popular “Candide”
which is a comic opera based on
writings of Voltaire, Eric Ewazen’s
Concerto for Brass Quintet entitled
“Shadowcatcher”, and Howard Hanson’s
most recorded symphony, his
“Romantic Symphony”. Offering a
somewhat eclectic mix of American
composers’ works there are, however,
striking connections. Born around
the beginning of the 20th century both Leonard
Bernstein and Howard Hanson are
relative icons of American music
while Eric Ewazen is a comparative
newcomer at fifty-three years old.
However, all three are known as
composers, teachers, conductors, and
champions of American music. The
Clarion Brass Quintet will accompany
the Alton Symphony Orchestra this
evening as well.
Sounds of the Season
December 8, 2007 - 8:00 pm at Hatheway Hall
This concert will feature the Alton
Symphony Orchestra playing their
oft-requested holiday staples and
also the magnificent Lewis & Clark
Community College Concert Choir with
their excellent vocal presentations
of choral music. This annual holiday
concert is a wonderful prelude to a
joyous season of love and memory,
and not one to be missed this year.
The Tchaikovsky Experience
February 23, 2008 – 8:00 pm at
Hatheway Hall
A concert to warm your heart and
soul on a typically cold and dreary
February evening with the Alton
Symphony Orchestra and the Alton
Youth Symphony playing together
exciting and well-known works by the
late Russian composer Tchaikovsky.
Included in this evening’s
performances will be selections from
the ballets “Swan Lake” and
“Sleeping Beauty”, and the
ever-loved Piano Concerto No. 1 in
B-flat Minor with soloist Peter
Miyamoto.
Young Artists Presentation
April 19, 2008 – 8:00 pm at Hatheway
Hall
This concert will be another in a
long tradition of young artist
concerts which showcase young and
superb performers. While only the
artists who will perform that night
have any inkling of what works they
will choose to do along with the
Alton Symphony Orchestra history
indicates a concert which will
reward your presence with a glimpse
into the future of classical
artistry.
Pops & Jazz Fund Raiser
June 14, 2008 – 7:00 pm at The
Commons
Don’t
miss this evening of entertainment
which will again include renowned
guest artists, a silent auction and
other special events. An evening of
music, fun and entertainment for
all!
